The Dark Mod: a tribute to the Thief series
From fan mod to standalone, The Dark Mod takes inspiration from the Thief series, but improves it in every possible way. If you’re looking for stealth gameplay in a steampunk world, then this is the download for you.
From Thief to Doom to standalone status
The first version of The Dark Mod needed Doom 3 installed, but it is now a standalone game with a library of missions to choose from. Although the Gothic atmosphere has a lot in common with Thief, it is definitely not a fantasy setting. Set in an alternate history of Europe, its graphics and solid physics interactions make the backdrop really come to life.
The balance between darkness and light
As former modders, The Dark Mod creators are well-versed in the art of shadows and stealth. The gameplay is as you would expect – to achieve your larcenous objectives, you need to master pickpocketing, lock-picking, and combat, all while interacting with the environment around you.
A new way to choose your difficulty
There are over 100 missions to choose from, all with their own special quirks. From multi-stage missions to messing with the undead, there’s plenty to be enjoyed. One, for example, lets you pick the number of guards in the level rather than choosing a loot quota.
A short but sweet campaign
The Dark Mod is very well executed, but it only feels like the starting point. As each mission is self-contained, it doesn't have much time to get a narrative going. This is a real shame as this is an excellent addition to the genre.
